Thanks to steady performances in several tournaments this summer, Douglas High School golfer Thomas Wicker has been named to the Nevada team that will compete in the Boys Junior Americas Cup competition July 28-31 in Vancouver, Wash.
Wicker, 16, will be joined on the Nevada team by fellow Northern Nevada Junior Golf Association competitor Robert Mario Perea from Sparks and two players who will be selected from the Las Vegas area.
The annual America's Cup competition, the showcase team event in the western portion of the country for boys ages 14-17, will be held at the Royal Oaks Country Club. The tournament features 18 teams from 11 states, Canada and Mexico.
Wicker, who won three tournaments during his spring sophomore high school season, has finished near the top in his first four NNJGA events of the season.
The Tigers' No. 1 player has posted 11 consecutive tournament rounds in the 70s since the Nevada State High School Championships.
Wicker's streak includes rounds of 72-79-74 in the Press Thornton Future Masters in Dothan, Ala., June 26-28. Competing in the 15-18 age group against some of the top junior golfers in the country, he placed 67th out of 224 players.
