Fire crews should have a line cut completely around the three-acre Little Valley fire.
Officials estimated last night that they would have the fire contained by midnight and would begin the process of extinguishing the blaze.
The fire is located northwest of Carson City and began just before 4 p.m., according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center in Minden.
Crews from the Nevada Division of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Sierra Fire Protection and the Reno Fire Department responded. Two helicopters and two planes aided in the efforts.
The cause is under investigation.
