County commissioners took no action on Thursday on an item to place an advisory question on the 2008 ballot that would ask voters whether to retain the building permit allocation and growth management ordinance. They did, however, approve an ordinance that would require those holding home occupation permits to renew them every year.

Former Douglas prosecutor Kris Brown has officially taken a seat on the other side of the courtroom. On Thursday, county commissioners approved a $163,194 public defender contract with the Smith Valley resident.

Firefighters in the Gardnerville Ranchos and Ruhenstroth will be conducting dinner dance fundraisers on Saturday. The Ranchos dance is 4-8 p.m. at Mitch Drive. Ruhenstroth's barbecue will go from 4 p.m. to midnight at the fire station on Pinto Circle. A fundraiser for Austin's House is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Park Cattle property at Highway 395 and Muller Lane. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children.
