Tennis: High school courts get screens

In early spring, Douglas High School girls' tennis coach Roger Rusmisel re-sparked interest in getting wind screens installed at the courts on campus.

Thanks to donations from the Douglas All-Sports Boosters Club ($1,600) and the Carson Valley Tennis Association ($1,000), the goal has been attained.

The screens were mounted by volunteers from the boys' and girls' tennis teams Monday morning. They completed the installation in under three hours.

As part on an ongoing project to upgrade and make the high school courts more user-friendly, a concrete slab has been installed from the curbside entrance to the main entry gate.

A special thank-you should be given to Bing Materials for the discount on concrete and to the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department for providing free labor and materials for the installation of the pad.

The next project goals are the purchase of two on-court benches ($500), four scoring posts ($300), a courtside storage shed and a plexiglass bulletin board.

A long-term goal is the construction of a brick practice wall, similar to the one at the Lampe Park courts.

It would be placed at the south end of the tennis courts and would function as a total wind block. It would provide the high school tennis programs and the public with a complete practice and playing facility. A rough estimate of the cost is $35,000.
