This very important off-road safety class for the youths of our community will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. It is free and a great way for them to learn safety on ATVs, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles. It will be held at the county pit on Highway 395 just north of Marine base housing in Coleville. There will be professional instructors to give them safety techniques, local laws and safety implications. Call the Mono County Sheriff Department Lt. Dave O'Hara or Deputy Ray Tems at (760) 932-7549 for details. Registration will take place at the event. Get your kids there if they will be involved in this sport.
Relay for Life results
The Antelope Valley Survivors did their usual fantastic job for this very worthy event. They are the only California team of 51 in the Gardnerville Relay for Life, and also the team from the smallest population base, but they outshone most of the other teams with their success in fundraising. The relay event is divided into two divisions: corporate sponsored teams and non-corporate. Our non-corporate team finished third in their division and were only $100 behind the second team in funds raised. Our congratulations to this very hard-working group and our community's support for their success.
Library news
Olga Gilbert of the Coleville Library has asked me to thank everyone for their patience during the construction taking place on the school campus. The library's current hours are Monday through Thursday 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. , and the Summer Reading Program is in full swing with story hour on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. The library has put out directional signs to help you get inside easily. Just follow the signs and arrows. If you want to reach them, call (530) 495-2295.
How Big Is Big?
This annual fishing derby will be over after Thursday's fishing. If you haven't yet caught an entry, it might be worth another try. If you get a good one, take it to the Walker General Store for entry in the derby. Good luck to all who are entered.
Defensible space
Soon Mono County residents will have to abide by the California state law requiring defensible space on their property. This law was created to lessen the possibility of fires and damage to your home and your neighbor's. With all the fires and destruction that have been going on over the mountains in California, as well as those we have had in our area in the past, this law is very important to comply with. I'll give you more information very soon.
Former Valley
residents
Word has filtered down to the Valley that longtime resident Paul Hammerbacher passed away in Hamilton, Mont., a few months ago. He was here with his store in Coleville for many years before his move to Montana. We have also recently heard of the passing of Helen Sylvester in Sacramento. Our sympathy to all who are left behind.
