Douglas High incoming junior Edgar Arceo is in position to have a shot at the school and state boy's records for soccer goals in a career.
Through his first two seasons with the Tigers, he's scored 23 goals to go with 16 assists. Not bad, considering he played the majority of his freshman year on the defensive end of the field.
As a sophomore, he tied for the team lead in goals with 14.
From what I saw last week, his game has only continued to improve as he has grown into the high school level of play.
Arceo caused the visiting German squad fits through both exhibition games with his fluid ball movement and his speed down the wing.
He'll be chasing former teammate Mike Gransbery (who finished his career at Douglas one short of the state career record at 60 goals) for the next two seasons. That would require 37 goals total or about 18 or 19 in each of his remaining seasons.
It's certainly not asking too much, since he's already had a 14-goal season.
Also, with 16 assists already under his belt, Arceo would need 20 more to break the state and school career records.
Time will tell, of course, but it's worth noting that he has a shot.
Aside from Arceo, Douglas has a number of talented players returning from its 2007 regional championship squad.
Forward Jeff Crozier, midfielder Andrew Andraski, defender Brian Randall, defender Ross Gardner and keeper Ivan Gonzalez all saw starting time last season and should play significant roles as this season develops.
Of course, they'll be playing one of the program's toughest schedules in recent memory with perennial playoff teams Galena and Fallon joining a league that already included regional powerhouses Carson and South Tahoe.
As this is being writting, opening day of football practice is exactly two weeks and two days away.
The rest of the fall sports programs at Douglas open camp four days later.
Douglas again should have a number of teams competing for regional titles with volleyball leading the charge.
