Rodeo: Locals compete at nationals

The Carson-Douglas Rodeo Club did end up with a national champion at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Dayton's Cody Kiser, who competes for the Carson-Douglas club, tied for first in the rifle competition at this week's national rodeo being held in Farmington, N.M. Kiser was awarded a silver buckle and a $500 scholarship for his first place finish.

Kiser finished with a score of 197 out of 200 in Farmington. Kiser qualified for the nationals by winning the rifle event at last month's Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca. Kiser had a score of 36 at state, with the next closest finisher having a score of 20.

Kiser also qualified for nationals in bareback riding. In his two go-rounds he had one successful ride with a score of 44. He would have likely had a much higher score on his second ride as it actually was successful, but he ended up being disqualified.

Others at nationals for the Carson-Douglas club have been Karsya Perez and Elyse Heberger in breakaway roping, Cory Hershkowitz in bareback and Jonathon Glocknitzer in boys cutting.

Perez went to nationals as Nevada's High School Rodeo Queen and it appears she'll finish in the top 10 in the rodeo queen competition at nationals. The National Rodeo Queen will be named tonight.

Heberger won the Tuesday night go-round in 3.56 seconds while Glocknitzer finished with scores of 204 and 207 in his two go-rounds.

Gardnerville's Grant Denny is also competing at nationals in steer wrestling. He struggled to a 20th place finish in his first go-round in 23.631 seconds, but had another go-round on Friday night.

Denny also won the bareback event with a score of 80 at Fallon's Silver State International Rodeo earlier this month. The Silver State Rodeo features competitors from all over the United States and Canada.
