A 55-year-old Gardnerville man faces 20 years in prison this morning after admitting to a charge of attempted sexual assault on a child under the age of 16. Valter Verbanac admitted to the charge on June 17, saying that he believed that if the case went to trial, he could face life in prison. He admitted to molesting the victim. Verbanac was indicted by the Douglas County Grand Jury in January. He will be ineligible for probation and must register as a sex offender with lifetime supervision.

On Saturday, 240 voters cast their ballots early. In all 189 went to Minden and 51 went to the Clerk's Office in Stateline and Topaz Ranch Estates. Poll workers in Minden on Monday said voting was slow, but steady Indian Hills voters will get a chance to cast their ballots early when a polling place opens up 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the new Sunridge Fire Station.

For all the smoke and other issues, this has been a fairly mild summer, so far. Today it's going to be breezy with wind gusts up to 30 mph at times and a high of 91. Temperatures will start their climb back into the upper 90s on Sunday. The smoke has pretty much cleared the Valley.
