An East Valley family helped deputies find a stolen car abandoned by two men after a chase on Monday night.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, a deputy spotted a silver Honda Civic with a bad headlight travelling down Highway 395 at about 9 p.m. Monday.
The driver of the Honda turned down Buckeye Road and the deputy turned on his lights to pull the Honda over. The driver of the Honda accelerated, heading east on Buckeye at 70-75 mph and the deputy pursued the vehicle.
The chase crossed Orchard and was discontinued when the deputy's supervisor learned it was over an equipment violation. The deputy slowed and then it was learned that the Honda had been reported stolen out of Reno.
The deputy saw the Honda continue onto South Benton Road, and then was informed the car was stolen. The deputy saw the Honda on North Benton Road and then turn east on Ty Lane, then north on Coyote Road. He was unable to close the gap between the two vehicles, but continued following onto the dirt section of Coyote, where his patrol car got stuck in the soft sand.
Coyote Road resident Steve Figueroa said he watched the chase from his house and could see where the stolen car ended up.
"I called 911 and said I knew where the car was," he said.
Figueroa said his adult sons, Steven Jr. and Jeffrey, went out to the car and then came back and guided deputies to its location on a dirt road east of Borda Way.
Deputies brought K-9 Rony to the scene to track the occupants of the vehicle, but the trail went cold on Borda Way. The vehicle was towed and nothing was found inside the car to indicate any additional crime.
