Coleville High graduates 17

Last Friday evening Coleville High School's Class of 2008 " all 17 of them " had their shining moment. In this close-knit community, most people have known the students since they were small children, so it's always a full house for our graduations.

There were probably even more people this year due to the fact that Gen. John Abizaid, who was head of the U.S. Central Command from 2003-2007 and oversaw U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, was going to speak to the class. As a Coleville graduate himself, Abizaid's talk was both fun and thoughtful, and we hope they appreciated his message.

It was really impressive to realize that the salutatorian and valedictorian both had grade point averages of 3.9 or higher. What a compliment to them and their teachers, especially considering the fact that they were both successful athletes for the school in all sports. There were more scholarships given out this year than I remember in past years, which was great.

The two very successful recipients of the bulk of the scholarships were Angel Vogel and Sarah Holden. Our congratulations to all the grads, and our best wishes to you in your future plans.

Relay for Life

The Antelope Valley's Relay for Life team will be holding a combination garage and bake sale this Saturday from 9 a.m. on at Walker River Real Estate on Highway 395. They will also have a booth at the Spring Fling June 21 and 22, selling nachos and baked goods. Be sure to support their fundraising efforts for cancer research.

Coleville Library

Olga Gilbert has advised me of a change in their hours this next few weeks. Due to major construction at both the elementary and high schools, the library will need to be closed from today through June 24. The summer reading program will begin on Wednesday, June 25. Be sure and get your child involved in this program for all its benefits to them.

Spring Fling

The annual Northern Mono County Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling will be held as usual on the highway June 21 and 22. They will open at 8 a.m. both days, with a good assortment of flea market vendors, craft and food booths. There will be something there for everyone, so check it out.

ATV jamboree

There is still room for a few more participants in this first jamboree, which will take place June 20, 21 and 22, with three days of great riding on U.S. Forest Service lands. To register, go to the Web site at www.easternsierraatvjamboree.com or call the chamber of commerce at (530) 495-9666.

In addition, there will be a luau dinner and no-host bar Saturday, June 21 at the Walker Community Center, which will be free for jamboree riders. For the rest of us, dinner will be $15 for adults and $7.50 for children between 2 and 12 years old.

Remember Dad

This coming Sunday is Father's Day, so be sure to get the dads a nice card and thank them for all they do.
