Former Minden resident Margaret Aileen Lanham, 90, died May 18, 2008, in Springfield, Ore.

Born June 1, 1917, to William Warren Lanham Sr. and "Dess" (Alice Hadessa) Fleming at the Lanham family farm outside Cozad, Neb., she was one of four brothers and sisters, Bill, Bob, Jean and Ruth.

After graduating from Cozad High School, Mrs. Lanham continued her education in the arts at the University of Nebraska. Eventually she relocated to Long Beach, Calif., where her maternal grandparents had retired. From school to the workforce, she worked, for a short time for the Ralphs supermarket chain. While still in Southern California, she married Dan C. Harkleroad on March 7, 1942, and raised three children. The family lived first in Hawthorne and then in Palmdale, Calif.

Known to most as "Maggie," she showed an early talent for art as she took Friday art classes during elementary school. Evolving into a talented sculptor and painter she also enjoyed playing the violin, piano, and singing. Oil painting and music were life-long pleasures, along with searching out brass and glass collectibles.

After raising her family, she went to work making custom art-furniture for the Wilcox Manufacturing Co. Leaving Southern California temporarily in the late 1970s, she lived in Aptos, Calif., while caring for an elderly friend. She then found her way to Minden in the late 1980s, and eventually to Campbell Calif., in 1994.
