It's Father's Day today " a day in which many people express their gratitude, love and appreciation by giving their father gifts, greeting cards, dinners out or taking them fishing, hunting and even dirt bike riding.
My father died many years ago but I still miss him very much. I miss how my dad used to come home tired from work and then he would sit down in his big comfy chair and my sister Bonnie and I would run to him and unlace his tall working boots. Then we tried to pull them off his feet, all the while our daddy would be singing one of his funny old songs to us.
I think my favorite was "Snot Came A-Bubblin' Down her Nose." It went something like this:
She's my honey, my baby, she's walleyed and she's crazy.
She's freckled faced, she's pigeon-toed and lame.
Her lower teeth are phony from chewing on Swiss baloney,
She's my freckled face consumption Sara Jane.
I'll never forget her, the first time I met her.
She was fryin' hot cakes on the stove.
Her eyes were full of matter, came dripping down the platter,
While the snot came a bubbling down her nose!
Bonnie and I would giggle and Daddy would bounce us around on his knees. He was a good singer. His voice was soft with a melodic sound and he could sure carry a beautiful tune.
Another happy memory on this Father's Day was about my special coffee. Once in awhile on special occasions my dad would give me a cup of coffee with my breakfast, but it was made with a half cup of milk and sugar and a half cup of coffee. I really thought that I was grown-up. I have many, many happy memories of my father. When I told my three daughters how I used to untie my dad's work boots, they started doing the same thing with their dad's motorcycle boots. Now I know how lucky my sisters and brothers and I were to have loving parents. We learned a lot from both of our parents and we received a lot of love and attention. And I know my own children are also very lucky to have their dad, my husband and the father of our three wonderful daughters.
Father's Day was first celebrated way back in 1910 and later the custom spread throughout America. Now Father's Day comes on the third Sunday in June. Mark your calendar to celebrate your dad every year. God bless fathers everywhere.
