Douglas County residents age 50 and over are invited to participate in a one-week Senior Citizens' Law Enforcement Academy Aug. 25-29 at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center in Minden.
The free academy is open to 50 students who must preregister.
"The Senior Citizens' Law Enforcement Academy's goal is to provide crime-fighting educational programs and information to the senior citizens of Douglas County," said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jim Halsey.
"Attendees will become more aware and comfortable with law enforcement services, and law enforcement officers, in return, will develop a better understanding of the needs of the senior citizen," Halsey said.
Classes are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the judicial center, 1625 8th St.
The academy includes training and instruction on emergency medical information, uniform patrol, jail division, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, narcotic and gang investigations, the criminal justice system, emergency communications, identity theft, fraud prevention and youth services.
Academy instructors are selected from county, state and local agencies.
Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check, and have no felony convictions.
To register, call the sheriff's office, 782-9900, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
