A 16.3-acre parcel at Minden-Tahoe Airport was recently approved for motocross competition by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, the events scheduled for one weekend each in the months of May, June and July.
Permission is nonexclusive and may be granted to other entities on any given day, according to the approved contract.
Staff has been working with Ty Erquiaga and Alex Peiters of Nevada Motocross Development LLC for this event, to be held in conjunction with Magiko 2008, a summer celebration that incorporates everything from the Wings of Change Air Show to a 10k/5k Fun Run in Carson Valley.
"We anticipate that this motocross event alone will bring several hundred visitors to the Carson Valley area and will result in an economic benefit to hotels, restaurants, retail and other businesses throughout the Valley," said Jenney Sartin, executive director of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Authority in a letter to commissioners.
The proposed course, a convoluted maze that twists through the property, is adjacent to Bliss Road on the northeast corner of the airport.
The cost for leasing the property is $500 a day.
"There may be additional fees for a site improvement permit and water meter from the utility department, which Nevada Motocross Development LLC will be responsible for obtaining," county officials said.
Motocross is a form of motorcycle sport or all-terrain vehicle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The term is also used to describe BMX bike races held on dirt tracks.
Dates for the event are May 10 and 11, June 20-22 and July 11 and 12.
