A driver responsible for a March 13 head-on accident that closed Highway 88 and sent two people to the hospital is believed to have been going twice the speed limit when the accident occurred.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Daniel James Duckworth, 25, of Carson City was southbound in a 1988 Jeep Cherokee on Highway 88 when he crossed the centerline south of Mackland Avenue and collided with a northbound pickup driven by a 17-year-old Gardnerville girl.

According to investigators, Duckworth's speed was estimated at 52 mph in the 25 mph zone at 6:20 a.m. when the front of the Jeep hit the left front of the pickup.

The Jeep rotated and counterclockwise and came to rest in the middle of the highway. The pickup also rotated and came to rest on the east side of the road.

Duckworth had to be cut from the Jeep.

Both drivers were taken to Renown Regional Health Center by helicopter with serious injuries.
