According to the National Weather Service the two-month period of March and April have been among the driest in the last century, with only .07 inches of moisture between them in Reno. That ties the with 1966 and 1959 for dry years. Average precipitation for the two months is 1.21 inches.

As if that weren't bad enough on Sunday, the forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. There's a slight chance we'll get showers Saturday. But it appears to me that this is the beginning of a very unusual season. Today's forecast is for partly sunny with a high of 70. The chance of rain doesn't start until 5 a.m. Saturday.

A fundraiser for little 7-month-old Kassidy Miller, orphaned in March when both her parents were shot inside their home, is noon Saturday. The event features a raffle and games. Money from the event, to be held at Backroads Bar & Grill on Airport Road, will go to Kassidy's college fund. E-mail backroads2@clearwire.net for more information.

There's a lot of good that someone looking to do some shopping could do this weekend. Both Carson Valley United Methodist Church and St. Gall Catholic Church are hosting rummage sales, as is the Topaz Sage Hens. Carson Valley Lions are holding the annual manure sale. But my goal is to finally make it out to the Lahontan Fish Hatchery with a video camera for their annual open house.
