The winners of Carson Valley Art Association scholarships for 2008 are Wendy Barrientos, Chelsie Haggard and Todd Hayes.
Barrientos, from Whittell High School, received a $1,000 CVAA scholarship and intends to study interior design and architecture at the International Academy of Design and Technology, Sacramento. Active with school sports, band, church choir and a part-time job, Barrientos found time to donate time to support groups for Angora fire victims.
Haggard, from Douglas High School, received the $1,000 Elizabeth Johnson Scholarship and has been accepted at the Art Institute of California, San Diego, where she plans to study interior design. She was in the gifted program in elementary school, a member of the National Honor Society and is involved in Key Club, and donates time to community events and the Douglas County Animal Shelter. She participated in a cultural swap where her family hosted a girl from Spain was in turn a guest in Spain.
Hayes, from Whittell High School, received the $500 CVAA Scholarship and plans to study graphic arts at the University of Nevada, Reno. He plays drums and guitar, sings and writes music. He collected personal items for overseas troops and participated in Relay for Life and booster picnics.
Examples of the scholarship winners' work will be displayed June 13-15 at the CVAA Carson Valley Days Show in the CVIC Hall.
