Toler Lane was closed indefinitely Thursday at Orchard Road as county crews assessed settlement of the road over the Virginia Ditch.
Public Works Director Carl Ruschmeyer said a Virginia Ditch culvert was leaking and caused settlement in the road on the east side of Carson Valley.
"We have leakage and erosion at that culvert causing a collapse and settlement at that section of Toler Lane," Ruschmeyer said.
Ruschmeyer said the road was closed for safety and traffic would be diverted.
"If there is a short-term solution, we'll fix it and try to open the road on a temporary basis," Ruschmeyer said. "Otherwise, we'll keep it closed until we get a permanent fix.
"The problem is that it's irrigation season. The flows are at full flow. A permanent fix might have to get put off until after irrigation system, late summer or early fall."
Ruschmeyer said the county would bring in a geotech engineer early next week for an assessment.
He said it hadn't been determined whether the ditch company was responsible for the repair.
"Regardless of responsibility, the county will go get the work done," Ruschmeyer said.
He said motorists would be notified as work progressed.
