The Hidden Treasures Antique Thrift Store, run by the Family Support Council of Douglas County, is closing after eight years of business.
"The store was started to help fund our domestic violence and sexual assault victim services, but it's no longer working out that way," said Steve Hamilton, board president for the charity. "It was a difficult decision for us, but it's the right thing to do in the face of increased competition from other thrift stores opening in the area and declining revenues."
Kristie Traver, executive director of the Family Support Council, a nonprofit advocacy group for victims of domestic violence, said the closure of the store won't hurt agency services.
"We'll continue to provide vital services to family violence victims in Douglas County," she said. "By closing the thrift store, we'll actually be able to focus more attention on our core services such as advocacy, safety planning, emergency housing and counseling."
The Family Support Council also used the thrift store to help clients re-establish themselves in the community by providing free vouchers for clothing, furnishings and other household items. Officials said the voucher service will continue through partnerships with other agencies.
Store donations will be accepted till Saturday. All items in the store will be 50 percent off from May 13 -24 and 75 percent off May 27-June 7.
"It has been an incredible experience working with and meeting the public in which we serve," said previous store manager and assistant director Shannon Harris. "The community has been very gracious to the Family Support Council."
Hidden Treasures is located at 1224 Pep Circle in Gardnerville and is open Tuesday through Saturday. Call 782-8692 for more information.
