During April and May, Project Santa Claus and the Douglas County Public Library co-sponsored a handout of new books to children, 15 and younger whose parents use the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

Project Santa Claus started the New Books for Kids program during Christmas 2000. The Christmas in the Spring book handout was started in 2001.

People in Douglas County have supported this program by donating children's books and funds to purchase books.

Linda Wilson, public services coordinator for the library, assisted with the donation of book bags, bookmarks and information regarding the library including story time and the teen reading programs.

By the end of the program, about 225 children received materials thanks to support for Project Santa Claus and the Douglas County Public Library.

The postal carriers from the Minden, Gardnerville and Gardnerville Ranchos post offices picked up food donations during their mail delivery routes on Saturday.

The yearly food drive benefits the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

A total of 10,285 pounds were delivered to the food closet for distribution to qualified families in need. There were 1,443 pounds picked up in Gardnerville, 2,889 pounds from the Ranchos and 5,953 pounds from Minden.

The food closet is open 1-4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday, at 1255 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

The food closet appreciates the community support shown for this drive. If you wish to make a donation to the food closet, contact director Eileen Boettiger, 782-3711.
