A memorial service for Philip L. Barnett is 2 p.m. May 24, 2008, at the Chico Evangelical Free Church, 1193 Filbert Avenue, Chico, Calif. Mr. Barnett died April 21, 2008 in Gardnerville. He was buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley on May 2, 2008.
Born June 28, 1926, in Moscow, Idaho, to Fred A. and Elsie Reeder Barnett, he was raised and educated in Moscow until his enlistment in the Army Air Force in 1944.
In 1945 he served with the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan as a photographer. He was discharged at Beale Air Force Base in December 1946.
After separation from the military he moved to Chico where he met and married Ruth E. Granger in 1951.
Mr. Barnett was employed by Diamond International for 37 years and was an active member of the Chico Evangelical Free Church for 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting golfing and traveling.
Mr. Barnett is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter Linda Lucas of Warner Robins, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Sherry Barnett of Minden; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial fund is available at Evangelical Free Church for anyone wishing to contribute in lieu of flowers.
A memorial service is 4 p.m. today at Walton's Chapel in Minden for U.S. Navy veteran and Gardnerville resident William "Nub" J. Hicks Sr., 72. Mr. Hicks died May 10, 2008, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer.
Born March 22, 1936, to D.F. and Nina Hicks in Miles, located in Runnels County, Texas, he later moved with his family to Maywood, Calif. He graduated from Bell High School in Maywood and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he rose through the ranks. As a mustang, he earned a commission and attained the rank of lieutenant before he retired after 20 years.
He went to work for General Dynamics' Convair Division in San Diego and helped developed the Tomahawk cruise missile and other systems. He later moved to Redding, Calif., where he continued his education and pursued a career in real estate.
Mr. Hicks moved to Gardnerville in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Gem.
He is survived by his children Debra, Cynthia, Barbara and James; companion Jan; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Ron and Windsor; and many nephews and nieces.
Mr. Hicks is to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in August.
