Memorial Day holiday weekend will be busy

Local VFW Post No. 3567 will host their annual yard sale on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 24 through 27, next to the Walker Mini Mall. They will be happy to accept contributions for their sale, except for heavy furniture items. To have a contribution picked up, call 495-9150, 495-2621, 495-2149, 495-2979, or 495-2488.

On Tuesday, May 27, the annual VFW Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Coleville cemetery, 9 a.m., and I have heard that General John Abizaid will be there

It is always a very moving ceremony and well worth attending.

May 31 at noon, Coleville High School softball field, the Coleville Boosters will sponsor a coed ballgame between the boy's and girls' ballplayers from the school and the Mono County Sheriff's Department.

The cost is $5 per person, with those under 10 years old admitted free.

Your admission fee will include a lunch, and the proceeds go to the boosters for their support of our Valley students.

The All League selections for softball and baseball in Division 1A have been announced. Our local students honored were Amara Rowley, Skyler Isbell, Jason Peters and Trevor Anderson on the 1st team. 2nd team honors went to Sarah Holden, Kim Torley and Emmi Sandoval, with Jay Clark named as honorable mention. Good going.

Coleville High School will hold their graduation Friday, June 6, 6 p.m., at the high school gym. More to follow soon about that evening.

The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual Spring Fling along the highway in Walker on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22.

As always, there will be crafts, flea market vendors and food booths. It will be happening 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Saturday night, 6 p.m., at the Walker Community Center, there will be a luau dinner and no host bar.

The cost will be $15 for adults, $7.50 for children under 12, and those under 2 will be free. For those riding in the weekend's ATV Jamboree, there will be no admission fee for the dinner.

There will be three days of rides from June 20 through 22, which will take place on National Forest lands and with permission from the U.S. Forest Service. All you ATV'ers should go on these rides. In addition to Saturday's dinner, the riders will receive continental breakfasts all three days, a ride T-shirt and other goodies. On May 9, Sgt. Phil West of the Mono County Sheriff's Department and his equine partner, Abby, joined with approximately 70 other mounted officers to participate in the California Peace Officers' Memorial in Sacramento. This event was to honor the 19 California police officers killed in the line of duty in 2007.

The Walker Thrift Store will hold its monthly $2 per bag sale on clothing from May 27 through May 31. This is a great chance to get some really nice items for such a low price. In addition to the special clothing sale, they have so many fantastic items available for very low prices. They will be open 9:30 to 2:30, so drop by and check it out.
