Toler Lane opened to motorists today two weeks after the road was closed at Orchard Road when a ditch culvert crumbled.

Douglas County Public Works Director Carl Ruschmeyer said the road reopened at 8 a.m. after crews completed a temporary fix.

The road closure caused Fish Springs residents to detour to Buckeye Road for access to their community.

"The ditch committee was very helpful in getting the water shut down, and we got V&C Construction to make pipe repairs for a temporary fix," Ruschmeyer said. "It was really a matter of coordinating getting the water shut down."

County engineers are looking at a future project for replacement of the culvert that carries irrigation water from the Virginia Ditch.

The culvert was leaking and caused settlement in the road on the east side of Carson Valley, Ruschmeyer said.

"It was pretty much what we had suspected. The pipe corroded out and partially shifted and collapsed at the joint where the water came out, causing a sinkhole," he said.

Ruschmeyer said engineers will present designs and cost estimates to county commissioners for authorization for a permanent fix.
