No, it's not a typo in the byline, Kurt Hildebrand is indeed on a vacation.
We have to let him out of the office every once in a while and after managing to get this year's Almanac out the door and on the press, not to mention finishing building his own house somewhere in the last six months, it seemed like a good time for him to get a break.
That being said, he spent the majority of yesterday, his first official day of vacation, in the office getting a couple extra pages done to set the rest of us up for the remainder of the week.
If you should need to talk to anyone news-wise this week, you'll likely be getting People Editor Sharlene Irete, News Editor Sheila Gardner, or myself.
What we lack in Kurt's wit and boisterism, we make up for in the fact he'll be back next week ...
The 2008 Kids' Fishing Derby is set for its annual run Saturday and Sunday at Lampe Park.
The last day to sign up for tickets (which are free) is Wednesday at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department. Call 782-9828 for more information.
Wednesday is also the last day to sign-up to be a volunteer. Derby organizers said they are in desperate need of help along the river (somewhere along the lines of at least 100 more volunteers) to help the derby run smoothly. The final volunteer meeting is Wednesday a 6 p.m. at the Lampe Park Pavilion.
Anyone interested in volunteering can contact either Trent Dowell at kfdvolunteers@aol.com, or by telephone at 775-267-2724, or Pamela Rodrigues at nevadabobe@aol.com, or by telephone at 775-265-1795.
The Downtown Minden Farmer's Market on Esmeralda Avenue is tonight from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The market made its debut for the season last week.
It's still cloudy, and it is expected to remain so through the next 10 days. Temperatures should hang around the low 70s over the next week. Expect to see some isolated thunder storms and some showers with a 50 percent chance of rain on Monday.
