Kathy Port used a 400 mm lens to bring an American avocet and its reflection in water up close and personal in her first-place-winning Carson Valley Photo Club entry for the month of May. Her photo, "Spring Reflections," was taken at the Incline Village Ponds Bird Sanctuary.
Second place went to Ray Moore for his picture of a Joshua tree just starting to bud. He captured the digital image at Walker Pass, Calif.
Wendell Jenness's third-place photo was of birds feeding their young in his Gardnerville back yard.
Judges said they couldn't resist giving the club's first-ever honorable mention to Ray Moore for his tongue-in-cheek photo of a metal spring, because the theme for the monthly contest was "spring."
Anne Bothwell was elected club president, filling an unexpected vacancy.
The club's next meeting will be 6:30 p.m. June 26 at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville. Contest theme is "hand tools."
