The R-C Morning Report

I'm just going to put on my sports editor's hat for a couple minutes here and plug Friday night's Mountain Madness event at Douglas High School.

Call it one final blowout for athletes and non-athletes alike at the high school, all playing sports that they've had no prior training in before this month.

The centerpiece is the Powder Puff football game every year, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday at the high school football field.

It'll be junior girls against senior girls for bragging rights, although the seniors have won the game six times out of the eight contests that have been run.

Last year's junior class pulled off an upset, so expect this year's seniors to be strong. Only one class has ever won both of its games -- the 2006 seniors/2005 juniors.

After the game, a tug-of-war, a milk-chugging contest and a lip-synch contest will be conducted.

Admission to the event is $5 and all proceeds go toward funding the Block D scholarships and various school improvements.

Fish will be planted today at Lampe Park for the annual Kids' Fishing Derby Saturday morning.

If you want to have some real fun, go on down and watch the first five minutes of the derby (breakfast will be served at Lampe starting at 7 a.m.,) and you'll see some fish literally jump out of the water.

Amazing what a couple days without food will do.

Oh, and don't get any ideas about sneaking down for some early fishing, the pond will be guarded 24 hours a day leading up to the weekend event.

As I look out the window at the clear skies today, it's becoming apparent that everything I said yesterday about the overcast weather for the next week will be completely false.

Not only that, today's report says that temperatures should climb into the low 80s by Monday of next week. I'm sure the forecast will change four or five more times before then, but the true lesson here is that you should never trust a sports guy for your weather.
