A Carson City woman was taken into custody on Monday for violating the conditions of her bail after admitting she'd used methamphetamine.

Cara Sutton, 24, was in Douglas County District Court to admit to one count of felony burglary for tossing copper wire over the fence of the Gardnerville Meeks on July 15.

Sutton said she'd lost her job the day before and was trying to raise money to make the rent.

Sutton and her accomplices in the theft were caught and the copper recovered before they could sell it.

While the burglary charge carries a sentence of 10 years and a $10,000 fine, prosecutors agreed not to oppose probation in exchange for the guilty plea.

Sutton told District Judge Michael Gibbons she had a prior arrest for check fraud, which was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor after she completed probation.

As part of her bail conditions, Sutton was tested for drugs and turned up positive.

She was taken into custody by the bailiffs.

A Gardnerville man who was arrested a month after being put on probation was ordered held until he could start a drug abuse program.

Douglas Goldy was arrested Oct. 28 for using methamphetamine and living with an ex-felon. Goldy admitted the violation of his probation, saying he didn't have a place to live.

District Judge Michael Gibbons ordered Goldy into custody until he could attend a drug treatment program.

Goldy faces 32 months in prison should he fail probation.

A Carson City woman asked if she could go to California to work for her mother in order to make her restitution.

Robin Ecklund, 50, said she's working two jobs and barely making enough to live, much less make her restitution payments of $750 a month.

Ecklund faces up to 10 years in prison if she fails to pay $144,000 in restitution.

"Not finding work has been very discouraging," she said.

District Judge Michael Gibbons agreed that the economy was not good, but said Ecklund needs to maintain steady employment so she can make her payments.
