Taking the place of the fall festival that has been held for several years, the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is holding a barbecue in the Walker Community Park on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Hamburgers will be $3.50 and hot dogs $2.50, with drinks available. They will also have a rubber duck bob for the kids to select the prize winners, taking the place of the usual rubber duck race. It should be a fun afternoon for all, and it is for a great cause " stocking the river with Alpers trout.

Local football

The Coleville High School Wolves team handily defeated the team from McDermitt last Saturday by a score of 68-20. Their next game will be Friday evening in Wells. Let's hold a good thought for their victory.

The middle school flag football team will play their last games Saturday in Lee Vining against Bridgeport and Lee Vining. They have done so well in their inaugural season and had so much fun. They'll be ready for the football team when they get to high school.

The girls' volleyball team now has a record of 5-0 in their league, so they are doing great.

Grocery program at commissary

The Fallon Naval Air Station's commissary has established a program that allows active and retired military with commissary cards to order groceries online, which will be delivered to the base housing community center in Coleville. Their Web site is www.commissaries.com, but for further information, you can call Cory Reilly at (775) 426-3420 or e-mail him at cory.reilly@deca.mil. This sounds like a good opportunity to simplify shopping for those who qualify.

This and that

The Antelope Valley's book club will meet at the Coleville library 2 p.m. Thursday. If you enjoy reading, this is a superb group to join. Try to get there, meet them, and sign up.

The chamber of commerce will be sponsoring a blood drive on Nov. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Coleville High School. This is such a good cause and helps support the need for blood donations for all of our residents, so if you can help, please plan on being there.

Even though Mike and I couldn't go to the Lions Club's Deer Hunters Barbecue, I've been told by many who attended that it was their usual evening of fine food and good company.

The raffle prize winners that I have heard about were Jim Ackles, who won the Visa gift card and Larry Sherman, who won the hunting rifle with scope. Congratulations to them and all the other winners.
