A private memorial service is Oct. 25, for John P. "Jack" Scott who died Oct. 3, 2008, at 88 years of age.
Mr. Scott was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1949. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was also a member of the Canadian and American armies during WWII.
Mr. Scott was a resident of Sparks for four years, Carson City for 25 years and Los Angeles for 31 years. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California, a certified public accountant for more than 50 years and worked for the Navy and federal government in Los Angeles.
In his retirement, Mr. Scott prepared income taxes for many local residents.
He had a talent for counseling his clients on both personal and business matters. He was well respected for his paternal and caring manner.
Mr. Scott was a proud Scot, who served a chief of Scottish Clans - Nevada, 1987-1989.
He was a Truman Democrat and loved to wax on about the short-sidedness of Republican public policy. His knowledge of historical and contemporary events was unmatched.
Mr. Scott is survived by Jessie, his wife of 33 years; eight children; John Scott Jr., Mary Jo Aparicio, Tony Scott, Lisa LaMantia, Mike Burchett, April Burchett, Scott Burchett and Tim Burchett, 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Minden resident and Korean War veteran Wayne H. Hughes, 74, died Sept. 17, 2008.
Born in Benson, Minn., he served in the U.S. Navy aboard a minesweeper during the war. After being honorably discharged, Mr. Hughes settled in San Diego, where he met and married Kaye.
From 1960 to 1986, he worked on research and development projects at General Atomic.
He was active in Little League and the Boy Scouts of American, where he was presented with the Silver Beaver Award for his volunteer work.
After his retirement, he and his wife traveled in their recreational vehicle before settling in Minden.
Mr. Hughes enjoyed fishing and attending jazz concerts, where he was always recognizable by his distinctive handlebar moustache.
He was preceded in death by son Joel and survived by wife, Kaye, sons Roger, Russell (Doreen) and grandchildren Christina and Alexandra.
