On Oct. 18 the Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross will celebrate 110 years of service to the area. The event will be held at the Buckbean Brewery at 1155 S. Rock Blvd., Suite 490 in Reno.
There will be appetizers and plenty of raffle prizes and Buckbean is donating $1 of each pint sold to the Red Cross. You can buy a raffle ticket for $10 (or more than one if you like) for a chance to win a 2008 Polaris Sportsman X2 700 ATV. It is four-wheel drive and is considered a two-seater. The proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will go into the disaster fund which last year helped 364 people in our area who received emergency shelter and food after losing their homes.
Monica Myles is the ticket coordinator and can be reached at (775) 856-1000 ext. 118. She can put you in contact with people in your area who may have tickets if you are interested.
If you'd like to help out in Douglas County but don't know where to go to offer your services, please contact Active Volunteers in Douglas, AVID, at 783-6450. They will return your call and ask you what type of skills you'd like to use. They would then be able to match you with several agencies in the area and you can choose the one that works best for you.
There are many ways to give back to your neighbors and AVID can help you find the right fit for your interests. A few of the choices are: Carson Valley Community Food Closet, Douglas County Senior Center, Douglas County Historical Society, Family Support Council of Douglas County, Center for Community Concerns, Douglas County Public Library, Red Cross, Douglas County Animal Shelter, the airport, Carson Valley Medical Center, sheriff's department, Douglas County School District, parks and recreation, Boys & Girls Club, Carson Valley Arts Council, and many more.
AVID also works with the local thrift stores that are operated by nonprofit organizations. We have a very diverse community and so many ways to share your knowledge with others. Why not give them a call?
The $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for shooting and killing the Spivey's miniature dachshund, Millie, on Aug. 5 is still being offered. The incident occurred near the intersection of Buckskin and Sorrel lanes probably between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Aug. 5. If you have any information that will help the Douglas County Sheriff's Office solve this case, please contact them at 782-9935.
The Spiveys recently adopted another dachshund from the Douglas County Animal Shelter and have named him Friday. "Although he won't replace Millie, he is really cute and fits in with our other dog," Jerry Spivey said.
There have been complaints of dogs barking during the night. Please remember that with our wide open space, the sound travels and even echoes in your neighbor's home. Let's be considerate and keep the neighborhood quiet.
Have a ramblin' good week.
