A winter weather advisory kicked off at 6 a.m., thought when I look up at the sky, all I see are stars. According to the radar, there's a band passing north and east of us. It looks like Fallon is in the middle of whatever's happening. The Minden to Reno corridor is pretty clear so far, though. There are no road controls in effect and from the Nevada Highway Patrol Web site, you'd think the weather was in Las Vegas.
So will the storm fizzle or flash? That is still up in the air. The advisory runs until 6 p.m. and calls for scattered to numerous snow showers moving into the area this morning. According to the National Weather Service, some areas may not see accumulations of snowfall. Those areas where the snow falls above 5,000 feet could see 1-2 inches. Look out for snow and ice on bridges and overpasses.
On the other hand, the first winter storm of the season is always marked by overexuberance. This storm doesn't look like it's going to drop enough to make a decent snowball, much less a snowman. The ski resorts aren't going to open, and it would surprise me if there was enough snow for the kids to go sledding above Spooner junction.
