Storm leaves road controls in wake

Road controls are still in effect this morning for the two major highways passing through Douglas County. According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, snowtires or chains are required from just south of Stephanie Way south through the Pine Nuts to the California border. They are also required on Highway 50 from Glenbrook to just above Carson City. Highway 50 two miles east of the Carson county line is also the site of an injury accident that occurred at 7:23 a.m.

Alpine County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers had their hands full Friday night as slick conditions dominated Highway 88 at Carson Pass.

According to CalTrans, chains are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel drives with snow tires from Kirkwood to 5 miles west of the junction with Highway 89 in Hope Valley. Chains are also being required through the Walker River canyon on Highway 395 in Mono County.

A lake effect snow advisory is in effect for Carson Valley through 11 a.m. as bands of snow are moving south from Pyramid Lake. Isolated snow showers are expected this afternoon. The high today will climb into the 40s. Sunday will be nice with a high in the 50s.

A Yerington weather watcher reported 3 inches of snow fell before noon on Friday. About a half inch of snow fell in the Foothills on Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
