District Judge Michael Gibbons reduced a charge from felony to misdemeanor for a 25-year-old Carson City woman who wants to attend medical school.

Regina Hunsaker paid $5,600 restitution for attempted theft, admitting she took several pairs of eyeglasses and sunglasses, and used customers' names to get prescriptions for herself while she worked for an eye doctor.

She told Gibbons on Monday she has completed all terms of her probation.

"I would like to start college to become a doctor," she said. "I don't expect to ever be back here."

In addition to paying restitution, Hunsaker performed 100 hours of community service, paid attorney's fees, and apologized to the victim. She also is required to notify any employer of her conviction.

Lawyer Derrick Lopez said with a felony record, it would be impossible to go to medical school.

"She does have goals," Lopez said. "She complied with all conditions, she has no priors and I doubt we'll ever see her again."

Prosecutor Laurie Trotter agreed with the reduced charge.

"You have your future in front of you," Gibbons told Hunsaker.

He said she could ask to have her record sealed in 2015 if she maintains a clean record.
