Douglas County Democrats said they are losing two to three signs a day to vandals.

Sen. Barack Obama supporters placed about 50 signs and said they're losing two to three signs a day.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating several cases of damage committed to political signs located throughout the county, according to Public Information Officer Sgt. Jim Halsey.

Signs from political candidates of Republican and Democratic parties have been targeted.

"It is important that people understand these type of damaging acts are criminal, and will be thoroughly investigated by the sheriff's office," Halsey said. "If suspects are identified, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Under Nevada law, vandalism is a misdemeanor. If the value of the property is less than $250, it's punishable by up to six months in jail. Where the value of the property is between $250 and $5,000 the maximum punishment goes up to a year in jail. More than $5,000 in damage and the crime is a felony.

Douglas Democratic Party Chairman Gim Hollister said 15 of the big Obama signs have been vandalized. He said the signs have had rocks thrown through them, been slashed, and that several yard signs left over from the caucuses have disappeared.

Hollister said the signs cost $45 each, for a total loss of $700.
