The Mono County grand jury is there for you

I recently received an informational note from the new Mono County grand jury, wanting the public to be aware of their purpose and availability. It was:

"If you have a complaint against local government in Mono County, contact the grand jury. As a watchdog, the grand jury may investigate personal injustices and inefficiencies for which the government is responsible. The grand jury will consider a wide range of issues including wasteful procedures and law enforcement matters. Describe your situation in writing and send it to: Grand Jury, County of Mono, P.O. Box 1037, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93514."

Library friends

This group will be meeting today at 4 p.m. at the Coleville Library. If you are a book lover and would like to help with their efforts for our library, please go to their meetings.

Women's Club bazaar

The annual Antelope Valley Women's Club Bazaar and Roast Beef Dinner will be held Nov. 9 at the Walker Community Center. It will run from noon to 5 p.m., at which time the dinner will commence. They are still seeking vendors for this indoor bazaar, so for more information and reservations, call (530) 495-2918.

Antelope Valley Artists

This very talented group of people will be holding their third annual art show at the above-mentioned Women's Club bazaar on Nov. 9. They will be meeting Oct. 20 to organize the show and solicit new artists. Any artists in or near the Antelope Valley may apply. Call Gayle at (530) 495-2901 for information and an application. They would really enjoy having some new artists join them.

Coleville football

The Wolves team handily routed Wells last Friday night by a score of 54-18. Their next game is in Coleville on Saturday, 1 p.m., against Smith Valley. At this time, they have a record of 6-1 for the year, so it should be a good game to see.

The middle school's flag football team's games last Saturday were canceled due to the weather they would encounter. I haven't heard yet whether the games will be played later or not. If the season ends now, they have a record of 4-1-1. Good going.

This and that

The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce's barbecue last Sunday was a victim of the really cold snap of weather we had. Thankfully, they hadn't planned it for Saturday, when the snow was falling. There were still people attending and getting good hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as the drawing of the winning duck race prizes, so it wasn't a total loss.

Monday nights at Topaz Lodge are full of football, fun and friends. The group that assembles there for their great food and wide screen game viewing are nice and fun people. Try to come and watch and eat the delicious tri-tip sandwiches for only $3, as well as giant hot dogs for $2, or great nacho chips for $2. The drinks are also a bargain.

With the summer season ending, there will be fewer travelers supporting our local businesses. All of us who live in the valley need to support these merchants " they're there for us. It sure beats driving a 75-mile round trip to Gardnerville for one or two items. We have lost one business recently, and there is a possibility of a second one closing after the first of the year, due to lack of business. Give them your support, please.
