The Douglas High volleyball team overcame a sloppy start and a six-point Game 2 deficit to pull off a clean sweep of the Galena Grizzlies in Minden Tuesday night.

Douglas trailed for a 30-point stretch in the second game but recovered with an impressive 15-5 run to pick up a 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 Sierra League win.

The latter half of that stretch consisted of Douglas' comeback run, which was sparked by senior Jessica Waggoner's and sophomore Shannon Dugan's entry into the game.

Galena had put together a 16-10 lead, helped by five Douglas errors, when Waggoner and Dugan re-entered.

After a Megan Mitchell kill, Mysta Townsell took the ball for the serve and proceeded to score three aces in the next four points to cut the score to 16-15 and force a Galena timeout.

The Grizzlies came back with a pair of kills, but Douglas put together a 7-2 run to take a 22-20 lead and eventually put the game away.

The match started with the teams combining for nine errors in the first 12 points, 14 errors in the first 20 and a total of 24 errors in the first game.

Douglas recovered from the slow start (nine errors in the first game), to commit just seven more errors in the match.

Senior Taryn Williams had a strong performance for the Tigers, registering a team-leading 11 kills to go with eight digs, four blocks and two aces.

Serving was particular effective for Douglas as Mitchell and Waggoner each had four aces and Townsell and Jordan Marsh each added three.

Waggoner finished with 12 blocks and seven kills while Mitchell had 20 assists, four kills, three digs and three blocks.

Jourdan Burke finished with five kills and Rebecca Antti and Christine DuPuis each had two.

Antti and Emily Garcia each had three blocks, Burke had two and Dugan, Jackie Harper and Jamie Lorntzen each had one.

Townsell had 10 digs, Burke, Antti and Mia Townsell each had three, Marsh had two and Dugan had one.

Harper chipped in three assists while Garcia had one as Douglas improved to 28-1 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Douglas defeated Galena 25-20, 25-16 to improve to 11-2 on the year.

Erin Allison, Heidi Schefcik and Keely Latham each had four kills, Nikki Chavez, Carly McCullough and Courtney Appleton each had two aces and Shawna Gervais had seven digs.

Carson McFadden added two digs, Brenna White had a kill, Bri Burnside had two kills and Dani Trujillo had six service points.

Douglas defeated both Fallon and Galena after experiencing its first loss to Carson last week.

The Tigers worked hard together to take Fallon in two games and beat Galena in three at 25-19, 24-26 and 15-5.

Amanda Wartgow had an outstanding performance in the match with three kills, five aces and consistent play, as did Hailey Sclafani with 15 assists.

Savannah Wood contributed five kills and seven digs, Renee Allen had three kills and two aces and Hannah Ediss had two kills and two digs.

Laurel Brown had one kill and two aces, Bree Doan had two aces and Crissy McLaughlin had one, while Karyn Eck, Cassi Uhart, Helena Strauss and Demi Cole all had three digs.
