Nineteen firefighters joined the ranks of hazardous materials technicians for the Quad County Hazardous Materials Response Team.

The firefighters recently completed a 200-hour course to become hazardous materials technicians with the Quad County Hazardous Materials Response Team. The course was taught by Haz-Mat Six Sempai and paid for by the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Office with fees collected from hazardous materials storage permits. Class was held at the Carson City Fire Department Regional Training Center.

During the five-week long course students learned chemistry, methods to handle hazardous material spills, personal protective clothing that must be worn, weapons of mass destruction and decontamination of victims. The class concluded with a week of scenarios to test their ability to apply their knowledge using the response equipment and vehicles actually used by the team.

The firefighters who completed the training are Bob Riser, Mark Secrist, Dave Lane, Kevin Green, Corey Petty, Jeff Linscott, Brad Mihelic, Dan Gelbman, Matt Smith, Auggie Arroyo, Shane Dixon, Mark Norwood, Casey Micone, Ryan Whitlock, Patrick Walsh, Rob Palmer, Micah Triplett, Paul Azevedo and John Brawley.

The Quad County Hazardous Materials Response Team is comprised of members from Carson City Fire Department, East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts, Tahoe Douglas Fire District, Central Lyon County Fire District, Yerington/Mason Valley Fire District and Storey County Fire Department.
