Happy Nevada Day! Nevada was admitted to the Union on Oct. 31, 1864, and this year marks our 144th year of statehood. Due to the many films and programs that have been filmed in the Silver State over the years, the theme for this year's celebration is "Hollywood in Nevada " Movies and Television."
While there are plenty of events to enjoy this weekend, the parade is perhaps the biggest highlight. It starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, rain or shine, and will feature many spirited marching bands from throughout the state, wonderful floats and high-stepping equestrian units. The route begins at the intersection of William and Carson streets and ends at the intersection of Stewart and Carson streets.
Genoa resident Kathryn Grant Crosby, an accomplished actress, former teacher and wife of the late Bing Crosby, is the grand marshal for this year's parade.
If you plan to attend, be sure to give yourself enough time to secure a good seat.

Simple, spooky punch recipe
Happy Halloween! Here's a quick and easy recipe for spooky punch that I found on www.allrecipes.com. You could dress it up with ice cubes that have little gummy creatures frozen in the middle or simply garnish each glass with a gummy worm. How refreshing after all that trick-or-treating!
Combine a 32-ounce bottle of lemon-lime sports drink and a 32-ounce bottle of lemon-lime flavored soda. Stir gently and serve over ice.
Have fun with this one by coming up with your own combinations. You might try orange sports drink and orange soda, or cherry sports drink and cherry cola.
Be sure to vote
Have you voted yet? Today is the final day to take advantage of the early voting opportunity, which is available only at the CVIC Hall. If you are interested, head over there between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to cast your early ballot.
Otherwise, you can wait until the general election on Nov. 4, when the polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. On that day, be sure you go to the polling place location specified on your sample ballot. If you have any questions, call the county clerk's office at 782-9020.
