Happy Nevada Day everyone. Nevada became a state Oct. 31, 1864, and we've been celebrating every Oct. 31 since.

For those who have been patiently waiting for the 2009 Douglas County Historical Society calendar, they are in the Main Street Bookstore and available 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Price is $7.50 for one or $7 each when you buy two or more. We are closed today and Saturday for Nevada Day.

Photos for the October contest need to be at the museum or in2my2cats@yahoo.com by 4 p.m. today. The winner will be announced Nov. 7.

Because of Nevada Day, there will be no Student-Senior Day in November, but the lecture series continues at 7 p.m. Nov. 13. Mike Makley returns as our speaker to talk about William Sharon and John Mackay, two major power brokers during the days of the Comstock riches. Admission is free and the Main Street Bookstore will be open before and after the lecture.

Here is the information I promised on the 12th annual Gallery of Trees: Anyone who is interested can submit an entry form to decorate a Christmas tree for this year's Gallery of Trees. You can participate as an individual, a group, a business or an organization. All are welcome.

Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. Nov. 14 with no entry fee required. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Entry forms are available at the Douglas County Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville. Pick one up in person or call 782-2555 to have one mailed to you.

All trees must be artificial, using only mini-lights; no glitter or fake snow please. We encourage the use of a theme for your tree, for the decorations as well as underneath the tree. You will need to provide all your own decorations, extension cords, etc.

Tree set-up is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 1-5. Beginning on Dec. 6 and running through Dec. 29, the public will be encouraged to view all the trees and vote for their favorites. As usual, voting will be done by placing quarters into the voting can in front of each tree. Everyone can vote as often as they like; voters are encouraged to vote early and vote often. The winning tree will be announced in The Record-Courier in January.

Though it may seem early to be thinking about Christmas trees, the holidays are right around the corner. Santa himself will be here at the museum for photos with the kids on Dec. 6. Hope to see you at the museum for the holiday fun.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the museum in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
