Douglas High junior Thomas Wicker had a strong showing at the first California Junior Tour tournament of the season over Labor Day Weekend, firing rounds of 74-76 at Tilden Park Golf Club in Berkeley, Calif., to tie for second place in the boys' 15-18 division.

The tournament featured many of California's best junior golfers, as well as Wicker and three other Northern Nevada players. Carson High senior Jonathan Singer and Galena High junior Cole Atencio finished 20th and 22nd, respectively, in the 15-18 age group. Spanish Springs freshman Jordan Gilmore snagged 3rd place in the boys' 11-14 division with rounds of 77-79, and Ashleigh Sorensen of Sparks finished tied for fifth in the girls' 15-18.

Wicker was able to manage second place despite finding that his driver had somehow snapped in half while in his bag midway through the first round. He played much of his first round and all of the second without it, but still finished close behind the winner, Bjorn Kallerud of Moraga, Calif.

Wicker will travel to San Diego on Sept. 14 for another CJT event at Sycuan Golf Club.
