The 2009 Douglas County Historical Society calendar is now complete and ready for printing. Congratulations to Kathleen Belles for her winning Lake Tahoe photograph and to runner-up Stephanie Sanguinetti for her photo of a bountiful August harvest. The August winning calendar pages are posted at the front desk.

Now that the 2009 calendar is finished, we can start printing and fulfilling your orders. To date we have taken more than 140 pre-orders for calendars. Thank you readers and photographers for making this project so successful. If you haven't pre-ordered your calendars, you still have time. Order blanks are on the table right outside the Main Street Bookstore or you can contact me at the information below.

The next question is: Do we go ahead with a 2010 calendar featuring more of your winning photographs? Several of you have asked that we continue the contests. For now, we will begin the September photo contest. Rules are the same: Your photo must be of something that is specific to Douglas County and it must be of something that is definitely September. Photos may be submitted in person or online until 4 p.m. Sept. 30.

If we don't receive at least 10 to 12 entries, we will cancel the 2010 calendar and the photo contests. We need people to enter so we have photos to choose from. You can't win if you don't enter. If it seems like the same people keep winning, it's because they keep entering. Please enter if you want the contests to continue.

Saturday is Student-Senior Day and your chance to meet Pony Express re-rider Bob Moore and his mustang, Casey. Students and seniors, you get into the museum for free. Take a guided tour, if you like, or just come to meet Casey.

The Thursday lecture series features Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs Director Michael Fischer who will portray John Sparks. The lecture series is open to the public for free and the Main Street Bookstore will be open before and after the lecture.

Entertainment books for 2009 are in and on sale at the Main Street Bookstore. DCHS members get a 10 percent discount on the price. Members always get a 10 percent discount on anything they buy in our bookstore.

We now have the Web site Ancestry.com free for any of you who are researching your family tree. Come on in and try it, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
