The private investigator in the black cap is being questioned by the district attorney with the white tie, "Were you shadowing Mr. Faulkner on the night of January 16th?"

Carson Valley Community Theatre's production of Ayn Rand's courtroom drama, "The Night of January 16th," runs Sept. 12-14 and Sept. 19-21 at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

"The color scheme is crucial," said director Maggie Allen. "In real life, Ayn Rand thought everything was black and white.

"The play is not a comedy " it's a murder trial where you first think the person on trial is guilty, then innocent."

"The Night of January 16th" was written by Rand in 1934 and edited by Nathaniel Edward Reeid.

"Ayn Rand wrote this as a play before she wrote the novels 'Atlas Shrugged' and 'The Fountainhead.' It was a successful Broadway play, but she didn't like the way they presented it. The version we do is the one she rewrote."

Allen was prepared to hold more than one audition if she didn't get the cast she envisioned for the play.

"Everything fell into place and I got the right people," she said. "I get so excited because it's going so well. Come see it. There's some audience participation and it has some surprises."
