With their streak of Sierra League tournament wins on the line, the Douglas High girls' golf team managed to hang on through blustery conditions.

Douglas, which has won every one of its Northern Nevada tournaments since the beginning of the 2007 season, took a six-stroke win over Manogue Tuesday afternoon.

"The conditions were tough today," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. "This course played a lot longer than we expected. The girls had a hard time hitting the greens in regulation. We had a lot of three putts. I think we learned a few things about ourselves today. We see our weaknesses and will concentrate next week on improving."

Sophomore standout Bethany Wurster shot an 82 to take second overall behind Manogue's Alex Phillips (80).

Senior Shelby Louie came in at 89, Heather Henderson shot a 90 and Michele Nikkels came in at 96. Junior Annika Crowe was Douglas' No. 5 golfer at 124.

"The girls were a little disappointed with their scores today," Gustafson said. "But they still managed to win. One of the great things about this team is despite being a small squad, they grind it out and get it done, even when things aren't going our way.

As a team, Douglas scored a 357 while Manogue had a 363. Galena was third at 390, Carson followed with a 407 while South Tahoe, Damonte Ranch, Fallon and Wooster rounded out the standings in order.

Both Douglas and Wurster maintained their respective leads in the season standings. Louie is third in the league standings, Henderson sixth and Nikkels 11th.
