The Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada Department of

Agriculture and the Nevada Department of Corrections invite horse lovers and

the general public to a special horse adoption event in Carson City on

Oct.11. Fifteen saddle-trained horses from the ranges of

Nevada will graduate from months of intensive training starting at 10

a.m. that day, and all are looking for good homes and enthusiastic owners.

Eleven wild horses from BLM-administered public lands and four estray

horses under the jurisdiction of the State of Nevada will be offered for

adoption at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, off Snyder

Avenue on the south side of Carson City.

NNCC is a new location for this and all future adoptions, the horse

corrals and adoption events having moved from the Warm Springs Correctional

Center in June. NNCC is ideal because it is an agricultural-based facility

with fewer security issues than the former Warm Springs facility. The day

will include a celebration and dedication of the new NNCC saddle-horse

facility. There will be free give-a-ways, prizes raffled and items

auctioned by the Mustangs of America Foundation.

Public access to the NNCC corrals open at 9 a.m., and a

competitive bid adoption conducted by an auctioneer begins at 10 a.m.

The horses range in age from three to seven years, are saddle-trained

with 120 days of training, and vary in weight and color. The beginning bid

on all horses is $150. The saddle-trained animals are trained at the NNCC

by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program.
