Cory Jackson's cross missing

A cross memorializing Douglas High School student Cory Jackson, who was killed July 21, 2005, in an automobile accident on Kingsbury Grade is missing.

His grandmother Cary Jackson said a family friend saw that the cross was missing from its spot near the edge of a cliff overlooking Carson Valley.

"My husband went up and looked behind where it was to see if it fell down the cliff, but it looks like someone just took it," she said.

The cross was well out of the highway's right-of-way, so state transportation workers wouldn't have a motivation to move it.

"I don't know why anyone would do that," she said. "Someone took his snowboard off of it, but that had a lot of meaning for the kids. I'm really so disappointed. If anyone knows what happened to it I'd like them to call me."

Cory was 16, and had been working at a South Lake Tahoe restaurant for just a few days before he died in the accident. Cory swam, wrestled and played football at Douglas High School. He worked as a babysitter at the Family Support Council.

Anyone with information about the cross should contact Cary Jackson at 783-1063.
