The Mono County Health Department will have their staff at the Walker Senior Center from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 for general health clinic (blood pressure, immunizations, etc.) and again at noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 to give flu shots to people wanting them. The cost is $7.50 for those 19-64 years old, $2 for those under 18, and Medicare Part B free with their card. The price and care can't be beat, so consider being there Oct. 1.

Walker Thrift Store

Great bargains will be available at the thrift store through Sept. 27 in their extended $3 per bag sale for clothing. Now's the time to restock your closet with some great clothing, especially summer items.

Coleville football

The Coleville Middle School boy's flag football team is 3-1 in the first four games of their eight-game season. So far, they have beaten Benton twice and Lee Vining once. They have four games left, which will be road games in Bridgeport and Lee Vining. We'll keep rooting for them, since they will be the future of the Coleville Wolves high school football team.

Speaking of the Wolves, they played against Owyhee on Saturday and won their game by a score of 80-52. Sounds like a good start to the season to me.

Lions barbecue

The Antelope Valley Lions Club's deep-pit barbecue will be 5-8 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Walker Community Center. The cost is very reasonable for a beef and pork rib dinner with the trimmings and dessert for $12 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. They will also appreciate any additional donations for their charitable efforts in our community. The raffle prizes are great with a hunting rifle with scope donated by Topaz Lodge, a night in Reno with lodging and meals, and the big one of a $1,000 Visa gift card. In addition to these special prizes, there are many more donated by local merchants. Having been there before, I can tell you that the food and desserts are wonderful, and the company is great.

Antelope Valley Wellness Center

This county facility has opened on Highway 395 in Walker with a variety of services available to local residents, including mental health, and alcohol and drug assistance. They also have a variety of enjoyable activities available at their center, including ceramics, art, rug hooking and working with clay. I'll follow up with more information in future columns. For questions, call (800) 687-1101.

Topaz fishing

It is my understanding that the lake's fishing season will be over at the end of September. While we are still having our nice weather, try to get out there to enjoy the scenery, the sun, and the fishing.
