It was a given this week that the Douglas High girls' soccer team's 10-game win streak was going to be put to the test with matchups against No. 3 South Tahoe and No. 2 Carson looming.
Through round one, Douglas remains unbeaten, but the win streak is no more.
Douglas and South Tahoe battled to a 1-1 tie in Minden Tuesday evening in a game that showed the parity at the top of the Sierra League is much closer than initially thought.
The Tigers had beaten a short-handed Viking squad 4-1 in a season-opening tournament in Reno, but both squads were at full strength Tuesday.
After a relatively uneventful first half, South Tahoe's Shelbi Spicer was the first to break a scoreless stalemate.
Sara Burrell crossed the ball in front of the Tiger net for Spicer, who touched twice and then put the ball home for the goal in the 48th minute.
Douglas came right back with a flurry of shots, two from Ally Freitas and one from Alex Laing, but Viking keeper Alexis Nunes-Fenley was up to the task.
As time wound down, Douglas turned up its tempo with Freitas putting a nasty cross in front of the net that Nunes-Fenley was able to scoop out of harm's way in the 65th minute and Freitas putting a shot straight on from 10 yards out that Nunes-Fenley blocked in the 68th minute.
Douglas broke through in the 70th minute when Freitas again broke to the outside, cross the ball just along the baseline and Tia Lyons slashed in front to head the ball in.
Nunes-Fenley finished with 12 saves while Douglas' Christy Harvey had five.
Cora Moody, Shannon Hubbard, Sage Lyons and Mackenzie Cauley led the Tiger defense while Dany Heidt and Katie Dry were strong in the middle.
Douglas outshot the Vikings 17-9 in the game.
