October is coming, and the Corley Ranch is inviting students to participate in the 2008 Harvest Festival School Days Educational Tours.
"Many students have not been exposed to ranching or farming, even though Carson Valley is still home to some of the state's largest cattle ranches and farming operations," said Paula Corley. "Most students' closest exposure to farming or the agricultural industry is strolling down the produce aisle at the local supermarket."
The Corley Ranch is located on Highway 395 south of Gardnerville. This is the fourth year they've hosted the Harvest Festival School Days.
For a cost of $5 per student, classes will receive a guided tour of the ranch's corn maze and pumpkin patch.
Along the way, students will learn about Nevada history and agriculture.
A 7-minute movie, "How Pumpkins Grow," will be shown in an outdoor theater. Students will learn about 18 varieties of pumpkins, corn, melons, gourds, sunflowers and winter squash.
Students can pick their own pumpkins, and dig up their own potatoes to put in French fry cutters to see how French fries are made. There will also be farm animals.
"Educational tours are designed with an emphasis on ensuring that students leave with a positive agriculture experience," Corley said.
The Harvest Festival will be open to the public all weekends during October. Student tours will be held 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. during October weekdays.
There is no charge for teachers and chaperones based upon a minimum quantity of students.
Students may bring sack lunches for later tour times. Water is available at the ranch. There will be free bus and car parking, and handicap parking will also be available.
