A special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service at 6:32 a.m. warns residents that increased moisture over the area will help produce showers and thunderstorms by late morning today. Day-time heating will increase atmospheric instability and produce showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra south of Susanville and west of Highway 95. Stronger thunderstorms may produce hail and wind gusts of 40 mph. Forecasters say there's so much moisture in the air that there's a chance that several storms will pass over the same location. Rainfall amounts in places could reach an inch, causing rapid runoff on steep slopes, swelling small creeks and ponding in poorly drained parts of town.
