Saturday, from 5-8 p.m. at the Walker Community Center you will be able to taste some of the best deep-pit barbecued beef and ribs you have ever had. The Antelope Valley Lions Club is holding their 44th annual barbecue. The cost is so reasonable " adults $12 and children younger than 12 for $5 " and you'll get all the meat, salads, desserts and a chance to win some great raffle prizes. The prizes include a hunting rifle with scope, a night in Reno with lodging and meals provided, as well as a $1,000 Visa gift card. Don't miss it, as it is one night we all can get together with our friends in the community.
Health clinics
If you aren't able to make it to the flu clinic today at the Walker Senior Center, you will still be able to get a flu shot at the general clinic on Oct. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Walker Senior Center. It's sure an easy and inexpensive way to protect yourself this winter.
Barbecue Oct. 12
This year, in place of the usual fall festival, the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce will be holding a barbecue in the Walker Community Park on Oct. 12, from noon to 3 p.m. Due to some fairly low water in the river, they will have a creative alternative to the rubber duck race happening at about noon. They will be serving hamburgers for $3.50 and hot dogs for $2.50. Since we can still expect some nice weather, let's go out and support the chamber's efforts for our community.
Postal service change
Yesterday was the last day on the route for mail carrier Pam Chichester after more than 34 years of service to our valley. I know we will all miss her smiling face and efficient handling of our mail, but we wish her the very best in the future. She has been replaced by Diane Reay, a lifelong resident. Let's give her our support and smiles in this new endeavor.
School sports
The high school football team now has a record of 4-1, having drubbed Eureka Saturday with a final score of 82-36.
The boys' flag football team has a record of 4-1-1 with only two more games on October 11 in Lee Vining. From all accounts, they are having a ball with this competition.
The girls' volleyball team has been just rolling along, knocking off their opponents, with a record of 7-3, and several very good wins lately.
This and that
Lately we have been flooded with yellowjackets at our house, so we put out some traps to get them. It is interesting to watch them at the traps, but really rewarding when you see a lot of them caught where they can't get back out and make our life miserable. Hopefully, we'll be past their time soon.
